Lady Liberty Reopens Her Crown for Business: After being dormant for eight years following 9/11, the Statue of Liberty may shine brighter than ever come July 4, 2009. While a new ticketing system is expected to monitor the visitor count at the top, New Yorkers and tourists will once again be able to climb the 168-step spiral staircase towards regal views of Manhattan and the surrounding harbor. If you want a less exerting way to experience the New York landmark, you can have a glass of champagne and sail right up to her. [NYDN]
Melissa to Sprinkle More Cupcake Love in Brooklyn: In addition to her two sugary outposts in the borough (Cobble Hill and Park Slope), Melissa Murphy is eyeing Brooklyn Heights on Henry Street for her third establishment. Sweet Melissa’s will most likely see another success, based on its loyal cavitied clientele and this week’s New York Times story on the rapid increase of chocolate and candy sales during the recession. Come early summer, you’ll know where to bring your sweet tooth. [BHB]
International Literary Festival to Include Brooklyn: The World PEN Voices Festival of International Literature has written the outer borough into the lineup for the annual event, which runs April 27 to May 3. Over 160 scribes—the likes of George Packer, Edwidge Danticat, Richard Ford, Salman Rushdie, and Rick Moody—from 40 countries will descend on New York to talk prose and politics. The Brooklyn Public Library in Grand Army Plaza, powerhouse Books, and Galapagos in Dumbo have been selected as the off Manhattan venues. [NYT]
Governor’s Island Creating Car-Free Oasis: The uninspiring tiny plot of land sitting just south of Lower Manhattan is getting spruced up, so they say, with a new world-class park, involving a two-mile promenade, cafes, hilltop picnic spots, Wizard of Oz-like fields of flowers, and free bikes. While the island has offered the latter (and free ferry rides) before, these new models are spiffy wooden things with baskets. If you want to explore the place and steal some pre-makeover soil, the island reopens to the public on May 30. [Curbed]
Jersey City May Have Found a Hook: New Yorkers don’t often get giddy about paddling over to Jersey City for a weekend picnic or after work drink. But this week, new sleek plans revealed the makings of a very pretty Paulus Hook Park perched on the water and facing Manhattan. The promise of verdant rises and quaint bridges would get anyone excited for what the warming winds may bring. In the meantime, nearby Liberty State Park has enough romantic nooks, jogging paths, and tasty food to get us over to the other side. [HudsonReporter]
