A Spring Fling in Fort Greene

Tagged with , , , , , , , , ,

Fort Greene got a nice shout out from The New York Times on Friday, and we couldn’t resist fanning the praise. This spring, as the green shoots and outdoor restaurant seats appear, head to Brooklyn’s culinary enclave for all things Senegalese, Moroccan, and Ethiopian. And if the neighborhood’s authentic African spots like Loulou, Abistro, and Madiba aren’t enough to lure you over the bridge, find yourself Brooklyn bound for the platter of sizzling cultural activities. For ways to add a little spice and adventure to your life, check out a few of our Fort Greene favorites below.

Brooklyn Academy of Music is always pumping out intellectually arousing events, from art exhibits to dance to cinema. Why visit now: BAMcinematek’s La Belle Personne, Meta & the Cornerstones on March 21st (it’s free!) at BAMcafé Live, and Eat, Drink & Be Literary’s evening with Richard Price for $50, which includes dinner, wine, tax, and tip at BAMcafé.

Around the corner from BAM, Olea Meditteranean Taverna is a delicious non-American alternative to African cuisine. Tapas and dips are winners, and the BYO Tuesdays means no corkage fees, live music, and a quicker week.

When it comes to where to shop for the best funky finds in the city, the Brooklyn Flea tops them all. And although the original mothership flea in Fort Greene won’t open until Saturday, April 18th, there are lots of worthy substitutes. Check out offManhattan’s coverage.

How to get there: All locations are accesible by subway. Consult the linked oM articles for specific directions or refer to the map below.

  1. This looks great. Do they have a good couscous? The week of the Francophonie is coming up March 19-29. I wonder if they have any special events associated to it.
    Thanks for the info!

  2. Thanks Lauren! Fort Greene is one of my favorite neighborhoods of all time. Perhaps because its the first one I lived in when I moved here. Well, thats in addition to all the other obvious reasons you listed and linked to. And, Madiba, oh my god! Their fish is some of the best in New York.
