Bikes at Governors Island

What: Free Bike Fridays

When: Every Friday between June 6th and October 3rd

Where: Governor’s Island (just off the southern tip of Manhattan)

Why: The island was a United States Army post from 1783 to 1966, and then belonged to the United States Coast Guard until 1996. Since then, it has been uninhabited, providing you with the perfect escape from the cars and congestion of Manhattan.

Cost: It is free to rent cruisers and children’s bikes on Fridays, and even the ferry ride over is free! Rentals are also available on Saturdays and Sundays until October 5th ($5 for 30 min, $10 for 2 hr, $15 all day).

How to get there: The free Governors Island Ferry leaves from Slip 7 at the Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan, at the corner of South and Whitehall Streets. Click on the HopStop link below for exact directions to this location from anywhere on Manhattan. Be sure to check the schedule for departure times. Pick up your bike at the Bike and Roll bicycle rental station once you get on the island. The Island is open to the public from 10 AM to 5 PM on Fridays, and from 10 AM to 7 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. (Governors Island, 212.825.3045, govisland.com)
