What: A Valentine Social, accompanied by a DJ with live conga and Timbale drumming.
Where: Salsa Salsa Dance Studio, 888 Broadway, Brooklyn
When: February 15th, 9:30-1 am
Why: Valentine’s Day in New York can be a tricky affair (especially if you’re in one). With a committed relationship, there’s pressure building each year to top whatever it was you did the prior V-Day. Usually something more expensive, clever, and well-planned. Then there comes a moment when you realize you don’t have to try as hard anymore. Now you’re considering a prix-fixe dinner, a previously consulted gift exchange, and that’s about it.
OR, you could really spice things up. Even for the couple who met two months ago on the NYU campus, Match.com, JDate, or Craigslist “casual encounters.” The last thing either of you want is an evening at the Lincoln Center or another night at the bar. (The bars on Valentine’s Day are for all those lonely people anyway—the one’s you’ve suddenly disowned.)
The solution for both pairs is just over the bridge and little known about. The Salsa Salsa Dance Studio, which has two locations in Williamsburg and Park Slope, will be hosting a Valentine Social at their Williamsburg location. For the $8 cover, love birds can spend a night in each other’s arms, surrounded by expert instructors that know all about throwing down on the dance floor. The Social is already a popular monthly event at both Salsa Salsa Studios that takes full advantage of New York’s collective frustration with the Cabaret Law (needing a license to bust a move… ridiculous).
Forego the quiet meal, the awkward chamber music. Instead, sweat, get close to, and have fun with the current flame in your life. If the Latin groove stays with you after the 15th, Salsa Salsa Studio offers regular weekly classes to all levels. That way you can live by the credo of all great lovers: “When in doubt, Salsa.”
Cost: Cover $8
How to get there: Take the F train to Delancey St., then hop on the J or M train and get off at Myrtle Ave. Get out at the intersection of Broadway and Jefferson St, and head west on Broadway towards Melrose St. OR click on the HopStop link below.
